Istorie

In 1916 emirul a permis Qatar-ului sa devina protectorat britanic.

In anii 1940 s-a descoperit petrol, fapt ce a adus bogatie tarii in anii 1950 si 1960.

In 1995, noul emir a inlaturat cenzura presei si a implementat reforme liberale, inclusiv alegeri democrate si sufragiul pentru femei. In Qatar se afla Al Jazeera, reteaua de televiziune araba ce are o popularitate imensa, dar este si controversata. Qatar a prezentat prima sa constitutie in 2005 si aceasta prevede libertate de exprimare, adunare si religie.
